On 2 April 1986, the Falkland Islands held a special vote called a status referendum. People were asked if they wanted the islands to stay part of the United Kingdom. The result showed that most people wanted to stay with Britain. A very large majority, 96% of those who voted, chose to back with Britain. Voter turnout was also very high, with 88% of registered voters taking part. The people of the Falklands overwhelmingly supported staying with the UK. This vote happened after the islands were involved in a war with Argentina, which claims ownership of the islands.
