Buran (spacecraft)

The Buran was a Soviet spaceplane, similar to the US Space Shuttle. Its name means "blizzard" in Russian. This craft was part of a big program, designed for the powerful Energia rocket. Many companies began building Buran in 1980. Buran made just one uncrewed flight into space in 1988. No people were aboard for this journey. It successfully orbited Earth twice. The spaceplane then showed its amazing automatic landing system. It guided itself safely back to the runway. Buran landed almost perfectly, even with strong winds. It was the first spaceplane to fly and land completely by itself. Like the Space Shuttle, Buran had special heat-shielding tiles. These protected it from extreme heat during its return to Earth. Inside, it featured a crew module with living and working areas. Sadly, the Buran program ended in 1993 due to a lack of money. The actual Buran craft was destroyed in 2002 when its hangar collapsed. It truly was a groundbreaking project, showing incredible engineering.
