Knitted fabric is special because it’s made by looping yarns together, instead of using straight threads like in woven fabrics. This looping makes knitted items super flexible and stretchy, which is why they are great for things like socks and hats that need to move with you.
There are two main kinds of knitted fabric: weft-knit and warp-knit. Weft-knit is more common but can easily unravel if cut, while warp-knit fabrics are much stronger and resist runs, often used in things like lingerie. The yarn in knitted fabric forms paths of loops called courses, and these loops give it amazing elasticity, sometimes stretching up to 500%.
Different combinations of these loops create various stitches and patterns, each with its own look and feel. For example, a smooth fabric often uses the stockinette stitch, while bulky, warm sweaters might use Aran patterns with their crossed stitches called cables. Other patterns, like garter stitch or ribbing, are designed to lie flat and drape well, whereas some, like plain stockinette, tend to curl at the edges.
You can also create beautiful designs using holes, known as lace knitting, which makes the fabric incredibly stretchy and delicate. Besides that, you can add decorations like bobbles or beads to make your knitted items even more unique. This clever way of connecting yarn gives knitted fabrics their unique comfort and ability to fit snugly.
