Macramé

Macramé uses special knotting to make cloth or decorations. People use knots like the square knot and hitch knots. It was used for practical things on ships or for sailors. One style, Cavandoli, makes patterns with just one knot. You can make belts, bracelets, or jewelry with it. Beads can be added to make cool jewelry. Macramé has a long history starting in ancient times. The word comes from Arabic for 'ornamental fringe'. It spread to Europe through Spain and Italy. Queen Mary learned it in England. During the Victorian era, it was very popular for fancy home items. Sailors sold macramé items calling it 'square knotting'. Its popularity changed over time, but it came back in the 1970s. Today, people use it for wall hangings and clothing again.
