Southern Gothic

Southern Gothic is a style found in books, music, and movies from America's South. It shows the bad parts of Southern life, like violence, racism, and poverty. These stories show how old problems still affect the South today. It started after the Civil War, reacting against old ideas about the South. Writers like Mark Twain and Erskine Caldwell helped create this style. Critics didn't always like it at first. Key ideas include showing madness, decay, and despair. It often shows hidden villains pretending to be good. The style shows the South isn't as nice as people think. Modern writers like Faulkner and O'Connor also use it and it influences music, films, and plays today.
