The Tang dynasty lasted from 618 to 907. It was a very important time for China. Many people think it was the best period ever. The Li family started the dynasty after the Sui collapsed. They built a strong government and brought progress. The capital city, Chang'an, grew to be the world's largest city. The Tang Empire covered a huge area. Its population reached about eighty million people. The Tang army protected the Silk Road and traded with many countries.
Tang culture was amazing. It is the greatest time for Chinese poetry. Poets like Li Bai and Du Fu wrote famous poems. There were great painters, musicians, and scholars. People invented woodblock printing then. Buddhism became very important during this time.
The first emperor, Li Yuan, started the dynasty. His son, Taizong, was a great leader. He expanded the empire and was fair to everyone. They conquered the Eastern Turks. Later, Empress Wu Zetian became ruler. She was the only woman emperor. Some say she helped government jobs, but her rule caused problems.
The dynasty started to fall because powerful military leaders gained too much power. Big rebellions, like the An Lushan rebellion, caused terrible destruction. The central government lost control. Chaos and more rebellions finally ended the Tang dynasty in 907.
